If truth is these things, an actual state, fact, an indisputable fact, then how do we try to distort or change truth to fit our agenda? That’s not logical.
The Bible also speaks to truth. Jesus spoke of truth in John 8:31-32: “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Jesus also says in John 17:17, “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” The word ‘sanctify’ here means the separation of the believer from the world in his behavior by the Father through the Word.
What Jesus is saying in these two passages is that when you abide in Him and you is that you will know the truth and be set free. As a result of that, your behavior will begin to be separated from the behavior of this world by God. Isn’t that we mean in church when we ask to be “Christ-like?” Isn’t that our goal?
Jesus also tells us what truth is: God’s Word. We need to stop distorting God’s Word to fit the agenda of this world. We have to stop twisting God’s Word to accept and tolerate sin. I know it’s not politically correct to say that some things are sinful, namely homosexuality, but they are. Read 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”
But notice this: Homosexuality is listed amongst a host of other sins. Christian culture has singled out homosexuality as the premier sin of this generation. It is a sin, yes, but so are a lot of other things and like those sins, it can be forgiven. I love how verse 11 starts after all these things are listed: “And such were some of you.” The Bible teaches that we’ve all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. God doesn’t see sin as a totem pole, but as a horizontal line. There’s only one unforgivable sin: Not believing in Jesus Christ.
Do you want to be set free? Do you want to be more ‘Christ-like?’ Jesus told us how to do this: Abide in Him and accept God’s Word as truth. His Word is synonymous with truth. Don’t think you’ve ever sinned too great to be saved by Jesus’ sacrifice. Nothing is too great for God to accomplish.
